Jussie Smollett Charges Dropped

According to Fox News Jussie Smollett’s Charges were dropped. It was announced today by the court to not proceed with prosecution, however Jussie is expected to give a statement later this evening.

Jussie plead “Not Guilty” to 16 counts of disorderly conduct that came from the incident in which he claimed that two men beat him and in the street and that the attack was a hate crime.

This news came as a surprise because Jussie’s court date wasn’t scheduled until April 17th. Jussie was brought in for an emergency court session where the judge ruled the case against him would be dropped.

Jussie’s attorney Tina Glandian and Patricia Brown Holmes said in a statement that “Smollett’s record has been wiped clean”

Representetives from Fox including producers, and the Cook County prosecutors did not comment. This storry is still developing.

My Opinion

The April 17th court session for Jussie’s sentencing was supposed to allow the media to be inside the courtroom. During this time the facts and the absolute truth would be made avalable to the public. This emergency court session that happened today was done in secret so that a deal could be made if Jussie pleaded guilty. This way his reputation would not be damaged from the findings. The judge who dismissed the case also granted the motion to seal the case meaning that the events that occurred can be legally dreamed “never happened”.

Jussie continues to say he is innocent, however no other persons have been charged with this crime. We will probably never know the truth about what happened at this point because of the sealed case. The two brothers who were accused and then cooperated fully with the investigation have not been charged. My other problem with this case is why would the prosecutors take the case to a grand jury only to drop it suddenly.

If Jussie was in fact innocent then he should have served his day in court and the findings would have been made public.

If Jussie would have gone to court in April full information about the case findings would be made available to the public because the media would have been allowed inside the courtroom. To avoid this Jussie’s attorneys cut a deal that if Jussie did community service and paid his bail of $100,000 then his record could be expunged and the case would be sealed.
