Sonic: The Hedgehog Movie – Review

The Sonic the Hedgehog film is based on the popular video game franchise by Sega. It’s fan base are mostly kids born between the late 70’s to the early 2000’s. Still to this day the character is very popular among the video game world and served as the mascot for the Sega brand.

Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) was directed by Jeff Fowler (In his feature directorial debut). Screenplay by Pat Casey and Josh Miller.

Ben Schwartz voices the blue speedster hedgehog Sonic. Alongside the evil Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey). James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, and Neal McDonough also stars in this epic action-adventure film.

The movie gives us a nice history of Sonic’s up bringing and sets up a universe of possibility’s from the start. Not only did it make every world or every level Sonic visit from the video game possible it did a great job showing us how Sonic traveled from world to world with gold ring portals.

Thanks to the internet reaction to the first animated CGI design of Sonic‘s character the studio went back to the drawing board after the first reactions to the trailer of the film were not in favor of the blue hedgehogs look. The changes ultimately delayed the film’s release date. Sonic the Hedgehog was originally supposed to release in the USA in November 2019 but was delayed to allow the visual effects team lead by Tyson Hesse (who worked on previous Hedgehog media) redesign Sonic from the ground up.

The outcome was a massive improvement leaving fans and critics pleased with the results.

The film’s plot has been done several times before where an alien arrives to earth causes problems forcing the government to seek out the issue and neutralize it. They call on Doctor Robotnik to apprehend the creature starting off the feude we now know in the video games. The family and small-town America element was a nice touch to the film, making it a unique story.

Jim Carrey steals every scene he’s in with his over the top animated effect, his performance is over the top, but what did you expect, its Jim Carrey.

The visual effects and the action scenes were ok, but there were some moments during the San Francisco scenes were the destruction didn’t seem to affect city life much, no running people no destroyed buildings even though Doctor Robotnik was launching missiles at Sonic. He only seemed to care about catching him and nothing else.

Sonic The Hedgehog is a very funny and enjoyable family film fit to amuse both fans of the video game and kids of today without sacrificing what makes this franchise so popular and Sonic so lovable.

Go with friends, go wth family go alone if you want. If you’re a fan of Sonic you will definitely enjoy this movie.
